Taking Juno are a band from Leduc, Alberta, Canada. They describe themselves as
Melodic Hardcore, and they most certainy are. November 18th 2011 saw the release of their first EP and for a band that have been together less than a year, it’s a brilliant slice of hardcore.

The first track, We Could Be Pirates, kicks you in the head right away with a great, short and powerful intro with some stand out drumming and accompanying guitars that sound like a slam on a cold floor. The track only goes for just over 3 minutes and this benefits the song, because it’s so in your face and undeniably replayable that you want to hear it again and again.

Stranded is up next. This song may be the best representation of melodic hardcore. It’s full force, yet contains guitar work and vocal melodies that hook you and stay in your head. It’s a rarity when a song contains not only nose bleed, mosh pit moments, but arms in the air sing-a-long sections. Something for everyone.

Track 3 is Game Changer and brings a slow of pace to the EP. It still packs a punch, just a slightly slower one. The most interesting thing about this song is it doesn’t contain any standard structure. It has no distinguishable chorus and this stops it from becoming in any way repetitive. The pace jumps back and forth with some more great drumming and guitar hooks.

From Start to Finish is the 4th track. I think this should have been the last track for the title alone. A melodic intro takes us to a kick in the ass from nowhere. The song takes us in to a false sense of security with many changes that you don’t expect and a chant-a-long moment that makes the band feel like a unit, and not just some people who happen to be in a band together.

The 5th and final track is Slaughtering Griffins. An interesting mental image. Things become a bit too much of the same here. It brings only what the previous tracks brought. I will say that it has a great break down. Everything stands still for a moment before a shout, almost like a battle cry, takes everything down to a slow and heavy grind.

Taking Juno give us 5 tracks of memorable and undeniably talent filled hardcore with this EP. Every track is good and could easily be sang by a huge crowd. If you want your anthems soaked in sweat and blood, this is the band for you.

9/10.
